Buyers beware of Yoni soaps, Yoni bar soap, and soap makers touting that yoni soap benefits you by making extravagant claims as a miracle vagina soap.

Yoni soap makers make many claims in their advertisements. They claim various benefits of using Yoni soaps and yoni bar soap such as: Balance PH; brighten skin; tighten private areas; purify; vaginal cleanse; promote hormone functions; fight bacteria; reduce inflammation; be glycerin-free, all-natural made bar soap with a PH of 4.5 to 5 to match the skin.

  • Soap cleans.
  • Soap washes off.
  • Soap on its own doesn’t moisturize.
  • Soap doesn’t brighten skin.
  • Soap doesn’t tighten skin or any other area of the body.
  • Soap doesn’t purify.
  • Soap is not a vaginal cleanse.
  • Soap doesn’t promote hormone functions.
  • Soap doesn’t fight bacteria; it helps wash them off.
  • Soap doesn’t reduce inflammation.
  • Soap doesn’t assist with yeast.
  • Natural Soap is not typically glycerin free.
  • Clear soap is not glycerin free.
  • Natural soap has a PH of between 8 and 10.

While there are medications and drugs that can do many of the things above. Soap cleans and washes off. It can smell nice, it can make your skin look nice, feel nice, but at the end of the day soap is soap. Medications, specifically FDA approved drugs are what you want to use to treat issues/skin conditions. Soap makers should never tout that their soap is guaranteed to treat anything; it may not harm the condition, but it isn’t specifically made to treat anything – unless they are FDA approved and labeled as a drug. For example, “I was told to try to use ‘Pine Tar Soap’ on my son’s eczema” – Little Dragon Soaps does make Pine Tar soap, and you could try it, but at the end of the day we do not make any type of soap specifically for treating any type of ailment. Will it help? Don’t know, we aren’t medical professionals and can’t offer advice on that. The same holds true for ‘Yoni Soaps’; none of our soaps are made for that purpose, we do not recommend it, and we suggest that you be careful of products sold as ‘Yoni Soaps’ as we’ve seen many a tall tale being written about them.

The truth about Yoni Soaps

Trust / Truth spelled out with blocks.

Many of these so-named ‘Yoni Soaps’ we find online are made from Ready-Made soap bases. Many claims that yoni soap provides benefits above and beyond those capable of soap. Natural soaps have a PH between 8 and 10. Most yoni soaps found online are made with glycerin soap, a soap that has additional glycerin (over and above the glycerin byproduct creation during saponification). We’ve even seen some on the market with additives that will mold and rot (herbs, lavender petals, rose petals..etc. added).

Natural soap is made from mixing various oils with sodium hydroxide. The triglycerides 1 molecule of glycerin is attached to 3 molecules of fatty acids get broken apart in soap making, the glycerin molecule disconnected from the fatty acids. During saponification (the part where the sodium hydroxide) is added, the fatty acids get neutralized by the sodium hydroxide. These form ionic compounds, which are what soap is. The glycerin is still in the soap. Natural soaps have 10-15% glycerin as a byproduct of the soap-making process. While glycerin can be removed from soap this will make for a very light-colored soap – not a clear soap.

Soo… Soap makes glycerin naturally, and you can remove it, but how do you know these soaps are not glycerin-free as advertised?

Most of these ‘Yoni Soaps’ we see on the market are made out of clear soap bases with various swirling techniques and herbal additives. Clear soap is made using a hot process in which you add sugar/glycerin and alcohol) to dissolve the soap crystals and allow light to pass through. Glycerin is a carbohydrate known as sugar alcohol. Glycerin is one of the core ingredients that makes clear soap see-through; all natural soaps have some level of glycerin in them. We have seen many yoni soaps being advertised as glycerin-free, that are actually made with glycerin.

Does Yoni Soap Balance PH?

The skin has a natural PH of around 4.8 to 5.2 – PH balance would mean that the soap would also need a PH within this range. Natural soaps have a PH between 8 and 10. Lower than that, you are typically not making soap; you are making detergents or synthetic compounds. A ‘soap’ that claims to have a PH between 4.8 and 5.2 would not be a soap but possible with a Syndet. A Syndet is not a natural soap; it combines synthetic and detergent ingredients.

Can Yoni bar soaps moisturize?

Soap strips oils and helps wash them off, not moisturize. Soap that moisturizes, exfoliates, deodorizes..etc. It is regulated as a cosmetic under the FDA instead of a typical consumer commodity under the Consumer Product Safety Commission. It doesn’t mean that soap can’t be moisturizing, nor can companies not say that it moisturizes – but if a company makes that claim, they need to ensure that they are following all of the regulations of the FDA on labeling and manufacturing said products.

Does using Yoni soap help brighten or tighten skin?

Soaps that make claims to whiten, bleach, tighten skin…etc. It can be dangerous. Sunscreens, skin protectants, skin bleaches, acne treatments, and rosacea – are not soaps; these are classified as cosmetics and drugs by the FDA. Suppose a soap is making claims that classify it as a drug by the FDA. They need to register their business and submit the list of products to the FDA for approval. Soap makers must label products appropriately as a drug, not a cosmetic or soaps. Any product making claims that classify it as a drug should have FDA approval and be found via search here: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/daf/index.cfm.

Purifying soaps

Interesting keyword used for marketing. What makes soap purifying? Many say that they have to filter tea tree oil in them. Even if tea tree oil is ‘purifying,’ – all soap does is clean and wash off. This means the product and its ingredients don’t stick to you; they rinse off.

Vaginal Cleanse

Little Dragon soaps don’t employ gynecologists or doctors. Nor do we want to recommend what you should use to wash your private areas. We suggest you discuss this with your gynecologist or primary care physician and not take health advice from soap makers.

Promote hormone functions

Yoni soap is just soap, claims that yoni soap benefits you by promoting hormone functions is marketing fluff and lies. Soap cleans, soap rinses off. These soaps that make these types of claims in their advertisements would cause for classification of their soap as a drug. These soaps, classified as drugs, would then require FDA approval. Soap and drugs that has been approved by the FDA can be found via search at the following site: https://www.accessdata.fda.gov/scripts/cder/daf/index.cfm.

Please talk to your gynecologist or primary care physician if you believe that you have issues with hormones.

Fight Bacteria

Can yoni bar soaps benefits help fight bacteria? Image of illustrated germs.

Natural soap, non-antibacterial natural soap doesn’t ‘fight bacteria’ nor kill bacteria. Soap should loosen dirt and germs and then help the water remove them from your skin during rinsing. Washing your hands with soap alone helps get rid of bacteria. But it doesn’t fight them.

Reduce Inflammation

No. Soap washes and cleans. Drugs can reduce inflammation. These soaps that make these types of claims in their advertisements, would cause for classification of their soap as a drug. These soaps, classified as drugs, would then require FDA approval. Soap, and drugs that has been approved by the FDA can be found via search at the following site:

Assist with Yeast

Feminine hygiene is essential, and we all want to feel fresh and clean, not have to worry about odors or anything strange. But yoni soap is all marketing fluff and lies. If the marketing sounds like it’s a cure-all for everything, it’s likely snake oil. Soap is just soap; it cleans and washes off. Any claims otherwise should be treated with skepticism.
